india

India is absolutely hands down I N D E S C R I B A B L E in words... I wouldnt even know where to begin. It is full on 100% all day every day sensory overload. The smell of incense burning, cow shit, diesel,FOOD, and masala tea. The sound of honking rickshaws, Hindi music on blast, people laughing and shouting. The sights of cows roaming freely, dogs, monkeys, everything teeming with life and energy. Ive seen nothing like this... Ever...

It is very apparent, though having only been here about 48 hours, that this place will stick with me FOREVER.

So far weve spent a day in Delhi, saw the Red Fort which was beautiful and grand in its maroon splender... This morning we took an early train to Agra to see the Taj Mahal...

It, is, grand. And like most of the beautiful things weve see here, it is difficult to conjure up the words to describe. Pictures do it absolutely NO justice... Tonight were hopping on a night train over to Varanasi. Heres a picture... Love and miss everyone!

ओउर होटल!

So we have broken our normal trend of 'show up and figure it out' travel style and we have booked a guest house IN ADVANCE! Woahhh I know this is such an insane concept for us! I specifically booked this guesthouse because of the friendly correspondence I have had with the owner and proprietor and also because they have volunteered to pick us up at the god awfully early time that we arrive in at the Delhi airport. Below is a picture from the rooftop restaurant of the guesthouse! The large minarets youre seeing there are from Jama Masjid in Old Delhi which is the largest mosque in India. Needless to say I am extremely excited to spend some time wandering the halls of this beautiful place...

10 days until BLAST OFF!!! Stay tuned!

नमस्ते!

There are days that drag and those that fly by. Ari and I will be heading to India in 16 days! Our heads and hearts ache with excitement but also that tinge of anxiety that kicks in before the journey into the unknown.

I have been obsessing with all that is India for years now and the moment has finally come when we can bring all the fantasies into tangible reality.

I know India will be very VERY different from everything I expect and assume. Which is perfect.

Since the day I decided that the world was made for exploring, I have dreamed of India. It seems that every destination I have seen; Thailand, Cambodia, Japan, Europe, has simply been in preparation for India.

As Rick Steves said in an interview I heard recently; ''India will rearrange your culture furniture"

Well we are ready for a moving party.

इफ यू लाइव इन ला!

For those that live in LA/OC and surrounding counties. Check the site out below:

THIS IS NOT IKEA

It is things like this that we should be supporting, local, small, organic business models. These ventures are what will and can create micro economies that will pull is through and eventually out of this recession.

As the motto goes, we all need to be thinking GLOBALLY and acting LOCALLY. Keep your money flowing through local business! Nowhere else is this more important than with food consumption. Do your best to buy from local farmers markets/ wholesalers. Without your support, these family farms will be chomped up and spit out by the massive agrobusiness monsters that are taking over our food supply. Wake up!

And buy your furniture second hand if you can, and if you must turn to monster corp, then try and make sure the products are manufactured in the U.S.

Lets make some fucking REAL CHANGE, we cant rely on elected officials to do it for us.

MOVE!

न्यू म्यूजिक

the new antony and the johnsons is very very good. his voice never stops amazing me. please support this man and his music.

also, im sure most of you are already down but please start listening to beirut, start first with 'the gulag orkestar' and then start into ' the flying club cup'. this is important to follow in this order so as to witness the way the music becomes more and more refined. ok that is all.

amputee band

We were walking through the middle of the jungle. Angkor ruins, Siem Reap, Peoples Republic of Cambodia. The cicadas are screaming like syrens. Its near deafening.

Up ahead is a group of men, filthy and playing old brass instruments and make shift drums.

Theyre all missing either a leg, an arm, or there eyes are sunken into there heads and non existant.

The sign in front of them reads: Cambodian Victims of Landmines Band.

And you know you're in the shit.

These were taken in Cambodia, at the Preah Khan jungle temple at the Angkor ruins in Cambodia... Its curious what nature can do to man made intrusions. Its almost like an overzealous decorator. It makes for beautiful pictures:

some signage

asia is a funny place. it is so extremely diverse and large (understatement). weve now spent a bit of time on this continent and the one thing that continues to make me laugh is the double edged sword that has become the 'backpacker' community. it has created an entire economy of its own in so many asian countries, because asia is so comparably cheap for westerners to squat around in. heres some examples of the battle between maintaining cultural identity and keep the 'backpacker' machine in motion.

this kid.

i remember taking this picture and feeling a small bit of sadness. this tribe has been marginalized by the thai and laos government. similar to the native americans in the US, they have small plots of land left over for these people and its like an implied cage.

they were so beautiful. the whole tribe.
